Enugu State has set an August 14 deadline to fill 6,580 vacancies in its public primary and junior secondary schools. The hiring drive supports the rollout of Smart Green Schools and aims to strengthen basic education.
Hyginus Banko, executive chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), announced the recruitment targets academic, technical, and administrative roles. These positions align with Governor Peter Mbah’s human capital strategy for the education sector, which seeks to provide “the human resources required to drive the Smart Green School initiative and deliver quality education across the state.”
Teaching roles make up most of the openings
Of the total vacancies, 4,698 are for teachers in core subjects. These include Mathematics, English Language, Basic Science, Basic Technology, ICT, French, Igbo Language, and History.

The remaining 1,882 positions cover non-teaching and specialized roles. These include 520 digital librarians, 380 experiential learning innovators, 267 guidance counselors, 267 ICT staff, 267 laboratory attendants, 136 account officers, and 45 technicians.
Applicants for teaching roles must hold a bachelor’s degree in education, a first degree or Higher National Diploma with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or a Nigeria Certificate in Education in a relevant subject. Registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria is required, whether completed or in progress.
Non-teaching roles have different requirements. Some demand degrees in Library and Information Science, STEM, or Psychology. Others, like laboratory attendants and technicians, accept an Ordinary National Diploma, Trade Test Certificate, or even SSCE/WASSCE qualifications.
Application rules are strict but free
ENSUBEB has made it clear that no fees apply to the process. All degree and HND holders must present a valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate. The board also requires proficiency in Information and Communication Technology tools for every position.
Candidates must submit an application letter, curriculum vitae, credentials, a birth certificate or affidavit of age, and valid contact details. Applications can be sent in hard copy to the Office of the Executive Chairman, ENSUBEB, or through the board’s website. Only shortlisted candidates will advance to screening and interviews.
The NYSC requirement may exclude some qualified candidates, particularly those who studied abroad or faced delays in national service.
